Towson vs. Shippensburg
Game Review by Colby Buss
Saturday the 19th of April proved to be an excellent last home game for numerous seniors but also statement to the local schools that Towson is a team to be reckoned with. The Towson Men's Rugby team went into the match against Pennsylvania's Shippensburg Ship Raiders with a 4-0 record and an outstanding 141-10 point ratio. The game started a little after 7pm with Shippensburg kicking off to Towson. After about 10 minutes of forward play with numerous turn-overs, Towson was able to secure a foothold with the first try of the game coming from Anthony Wamwea. Without the tee, Dave Carroll came close but no conversion was awarded. Following the kick off Towson saw some quick ball, rucks were won, and within 5 minutes Anthony Tapp picked and broke through the Shippensburg line to give a perfectly timed pass to Dave Carroll for his first of three try's that evening. Dave missed the conversion taking the score to 10-0, Towson. Within in minutes, Towson was again close to the opponents try line when Dave took a penalty kick moving the score to 13-0. Following the kick, Towson was able to swing the ball wide catching Pete Lutz on the wing to run in another try before half-time. Dave was able to make the conversion taking the score up to 20-0 going into the half.
Towson kicked off to Shippensburg in the second half with a nice 20-0 lead. It was evident that our conditioning had paid off with some impressive runs from forwards Jay Baumgartner, Brandon MacPherson, Chad Dammers, Mike Dignazio and Pius. Mike Morris was able to get a well fought try right on the line, Dave missed the conversion. The remainder of the game, like the 1st half, was played in Shippensburg's half. Due to a lot of hard work from the forwards, Towson constantly won the ball in rucks. Following a quick line out by Felipe Tobar, he ran up the middle of the field and then gave a pop pass to Pete for a quick try. About 10 phases later, Felipe had his own try of the game, walking it in to make it look easy, Dave followed with the conversion. Once again following the kick, Towson had the ball within the opponents half. Dave Carroll got the ball quick out of the ruck courtesy of Mike Dignazio and miraculously chip kicked the ball over the head of one of the 'Ship Raiders' to receive a perfect bounce and run it in for a try. After completing the conversion for his try Towson led Shippensburg 44-0. Another try was added to this count in the 2nd half as well as yet another try from Dave.
Shippensburg didn't give up throughout the evening but just weren't able to penetrate Towson's lines and make a stand. The Towson forward pack dominated the scrum downs and the overall defense was perfect.
