Due to the snow and ice accumulation on the campus practice fields, the Tigers were limited to only a couple hours of practice time in an indoor facility.
The Towson Tigers traveled to Blacksburg, Virginia to face off against the Virginia Tech Hokies and came out with a 12-8 loss. The first half started play with Towson kicking off to Virginia Tech. After a quick knock-on, the Tigers gained a scrum inside the Hokies. With a quick play off the back of the scrum, Towson was within 5 meters of the try line to score early in the game.
After a penalty, Virginia Tech was able to clear the ball. The game then proceeded to play back and forth on both sides of the field. Both back lines made huge gains on the field. The first score of the game from the Hokies outside center Ryan Sullivan. The conversion was good and the score was Hokies leading the Tigers, 7-0.
The Tigers quickly bounced back and put themselves into scoring position. The Towson scrum half, Felipe Tobar, chipped the ball over the heads of the defense in an attempt for a try. Virginia Tech recovered the ball and dotted it down. The ensuing 22 dropout got the Hokies out of bad field position.
Eventually the Tigers managed to gain field position inside the 22. Towson then attempted to kick for points. The kick by Billy Trentzsch was no good, bouncing off the upright back into his hands and ultimately made a pass to inside center, Jeremy Gorney, for the try. The conversion after was no good. At the end of the first half, Virginia Tech led Towson, 7-5.
The second half started and proved to have many opportunities to score for both teams. However, neither team was unable to finish off for points. The Tigers eventually scored off a penalty kick to take the lead, 8-7. Near the final minutes of the game, the Hokies started to gain momentum. The Hokies scored the winning try in the far corner to make the score 12-8. The conversion was no good. The game ended shortly after.
The B-side match for the Tigers was against Virginia Tech’s B-side in the first half and Virginia Tech’s C-side for the second half. The Tigers came away with a victory of 12-5. Nate and rookie, Mike, scored the two tries.
