Game review by Greg Grimsley
Towson's first conference game of the season was against #4 ranked Penn State University. The game ended in tough loss of 34-10. Six trys to two saw Penn State as the victors but not after a very close fight given by the Tigers.
Penn State quickly scored, running two phases from their line out. (The recovery in the end zone appeared to be a knock-on from the Towson players but their was no call and the try was awarded to PSU) The point after from the left corner was no good putting PSU up 5-0. The following score was also put up by Penn state on a similar phase and scored again in the left corner. The points after was no good putting Penn. state up 10-0 with about 25 minutes of the half over. Towson's first points came from recovering a bobbled kick by Penn state in the try zone. The ball was dotted down by Sam Weiland. A points after attempt by Billy Trentzsch was no good to put the game at 10-5. The next score posted was by PSU on an intercepted pass in the backline for an easy try between the posts. The points after was good putting PSU up 17-5. Halftime score 17-5.
The Second half proved to be a defensive hold-off for Towson with a couple positive offensive plays. Shortly into the second half scum half Felipe Tobar was given a red card and Towson was a man down for the rest of the game. Penn State's subsequent trys were set up by huge gains in their back line against Towson's man down team. Penn State put up 17 additional points to make the score 34-5 with only a couple minutes left in the game. The final score of the game was set up by a big run by Chad Dammers that put Towson very close to the try zone. However a penalty was called and a five meter scrum was awarded to PSU. The ball came out of the back of the scrum and Greg Grimsley quickly fell on it in the try zone for Towson to make the score 34-10. The points after attempt was no good with time expired for a final score of 34-10, Penn State.
Towson learned a lot from the game as the team showed great improvement since their last encounter with PSU. Towson is looking forward to the rest of the season and have their eyes set on making it to the play offs.
