Game review by Greg Grimsley

Weather conditions: partly cloudy with a wet field from rain and drizzling up until the start of the game.

Towson's first away game of the season against long time rival, Loyola, proved to be a dogfight. Towson Rugby saw a 34-0 victory over Loyola on Sept 30, 2006.

The day started out with some concerns for the Towson Tigers with rainy/wet conditions, some starters/key backups not playing, and being the first away game. These concerns aided in Towson's slow start to commanding the game. Early on the Tigers were pinned inside their own 22, playing defense and trying to clear the ball out of bounds. Various attempts to clear the ball resulted in pressure from the excited Loyola team making blocks, forcing poor kicking, and added pressure to the back line. Thus keeping the Tigers pinned playing defense in poor field position.

After these several attempts, Towson cleared the ball only to cause a penalty to give Loyola an attempt to kick for points. The incurring attempt at points failed and was dotted down by Dante Brown setting up a 22 dropout. Loyola's second attempt at scoring came from another penalty from Towson and another attempt at kicking for points. The attempt failed. The game then was played between the 22's until late in the half. The first points put up by Towson incurred after a 5 meter scrum and kick by Loyola to clear ball. The kick was countered, spread wide and resulted in Nick Renaud dotting the ball down in the left corner of the try zone. The points after attempt by Billy Trentzsch was no good and put Towson up 5-0. Right before halftime Towson again incurred a penalty and Loyola tried its third attempt to kick for points. The kick failed. Shortly after, the half ended with Towson leading 5-0.

The second half started with Loyola kicking and Towson receiving. Towson's second half proved to be more of a game the Tigers had been practicing this season. With some better kicking to space and playing more with the forwards, the game turned in favor of the Tigers. Early on, two attempts to score by Billy Trentzsch, Tony Wamwea, and Jeremy Gorney were thwarted by Loyola. Shortly after on the blindside of a scrum, winger, Jeremy Gorney, was able to get into the try zone on a quick pass from scrumhalf, Matt Chiaramonte. Gorney was able to out run the pursuit and put the ball down between the posts to put Towson up 10-0. The points after chip shot from the center of the field was good by Billy Trentzsch, putting Towson up 12-0.

Towson scored the next points after a "show'n'go" to the post man of Loyola by scrumhalf Matt Chiaramonte to the flanker, Greg Grimsley, for an easy try put down between the posts. The points after attempt was good, putting Towson up 19-0. Shortly after there was a penalty on Loyola and Billy Trentzsch kicked for points and made the score 22-0. The next try came from prop/flanker DeVaughn "Devo" Maddox, to put Towson up 27-0. Points after attempt was good and the score stood at 29-0. Devo also put up the next try, increasing the lead to 34-0. The points after attempt was no good, again. Final score: 34-0.
