The Towson Tigers traveled to Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) to come away with a 42-29 victory over IUP. The Weather conditions were fairly cold and windy on the Saturday afternoon. For IUP, it was their homecoming weekend and was determined to play with heart and aggressiveness.
To start the game IUP received the kick and Towson quickly stole possession inside IUP’s 22. After a Towson penalty, IUP was able to clear the ball and move downfield using their forwards to punch the ball. IUP punched in the ball for the first try of the game to make the score 0-5. The points after attempt was no good holding the score at 0-5 IUP over Towson. Towson countered the first try by IUP with a penalty kick for points by Billy Trentzsch. Towson 3, IUP 5. IUP continued the pressure on defense and moving the ball, keeping Towson inside their half for much of the first half of the game.
Towson, after some mistakes by IUP, got some forward field position and used the forwards to pound in the Tiger’s first try of the afternoon. A pass from John Murphy set up Chad Dammers for the try. It gave Towson the lead at 8-5. The points after kick by Billy Trentzsch was no good, holding the score at 8-5 Towson. The second try for Towson came off a pop pass from Billy Trentzsch to Greg Grimsley up the middle to put Towson up 13-5. The points after was good putting Towson up 15-5 over IUP. The final try of the half came from Chad Dammers pounding it in to put Towson up 20-5. The points after was no good and the first half ended with the score: Towson 20, IUP 5.
The second half started with IUP kicking to Towson. After the kick, Towson was under pressure; some poor mistakes and tackling on the Tigers behalf turned the ball over for a quick try on the left hand side for IUP. The points after was no good. Towson 20, IUP 10. The second try of the half again came from IUP on a bobbled counter attack and blocked kick. The points after was no good. Score: Towson 20, IUP 15. Towson then countered after several phases with a pop off the ruck to John Murphy who put in the try. The points after was no good; Towson 25, IUP 15. IUP then scored again. The points after was good making it 25-22 in favor of Towson. Towson quickly scored off a quick tap penalty starting with Billy Trentzsch to John Murphy who gave the dump pass to Greg Grimsley. Greg Grimsley put down the try on the left side. With the points after attempt no good, the score was at 30-22 - Towson. The following points were also put up by the Tigers with a try put down between the posts by Jeremy Gorney. The Points after was good. Score: Towson 37, IUP 22. Towson quickly scored again, coming from the prop John Murphy. Billy Trentzsch’s kick after was no good. This would be the final points the Tigers put up in the game, making it 42-22 - Towson. However, IUP would be able to put up one more try. The points after was good. Final score: Towson 42, IUP 29.
