Welcome to Towson University’s Rugby Club

Towson Rugby moves up in the rankings!

With TU’s win over Hopkins, and Georgetown’s surprising upset loss to Loyola, Towson Rugby has moved up a position to #7 in the nation. Salisbury also moved up a spot to #8 while previously unranked Loyola moves up to the #10 position. Georgetown dropped all the way down from #4 to #14. This being said, all four of the teams entering the PRU semifinals this weekend are ranked in the top 15 Division II rugby clubs in the nation. This weekend should be a great weekend of rugby. If you can, be sure to come cheer on Towson as they take on Georgetown on saturday, and the finals/consolation final on sunday at Severn River’s home pitch in Severna Park.

10/30/10 Results – Johns Hopkins

After a slow start, Towson rolled over Hopkins, dominating in every phase of play. With the win, Towson enters the PRU playoffs as the #1 seed and will have a bye this week. Next week, TU will play the winner of the Georgetown/Navy C game in the semifinals.

The B side followed suit with a victory of their own. They were able to keep JHU’s two best players, their flyhalf and center, from moving the ball at all. Through both excellent movement from the backs and excellent rucking and tackling by the forwards, the Beavers were able to finish out the season with another shutout.

Final Scores

A Side : TU 61 - JHU 3 W

B Side : TU 31 - JHU 0 W

Nationally Ranked!

After the big win over Salisbury this weekend, Towson Rugby is finally being recognized at the national level in Division II rugby! Towson is currently ranked #8 in the nation! With the loss, Salisbury dropped from #4 to #9. The lone other team in the PRU to be ranked, Georgetown, currently holds the #5 position.

“The seemingly big upset of the week was unranked Towson knocking off #4 Salisbury 8-3, but judging by Towson’s dominating performance so far in the Potomac, perhaps that was more of a case of ignorance on RUGBYMag’s part than an upset.”

Towson currently holds onto the #1 seed in the PRU and will face Johns Hopkins at Bocek Field this weekend in the final match of the regular season. A win would seal up the #1 spot going into the tournament and would leave TU with a bye week for the first round of playoffs. Come out and support the nationally ranked Towson Rugby team!

Towson Rugby after defeating Salisbury

10/23/10 Results – Salisbury

The Towson ruggers hosted Salisbury, currently the #4 ranked Division II team in the nation, on Burdick field this weekend. Salisbury has been one of the best programs in the nation for the last decade and TU had something to prove. The match kept everyone on the edge of their seats up until the final whistle. In the end, Towson came out on top of this low scoring, brutal match by the score of 8 to 3. TU has yet to give up a try to any opponent on the season and has only let up 6 points, both off of penalty kicks.

We have submitted the results of the game to Rugbymag.com, who is responsible for posting the national rankings, and expect to be in the top 25 when the new rankings are posted sometime this week. We will update the site as soon as they are posted. Stay tuned.

The B side followed in a match against a Salisbury side consisting of many Alumni and a few second side players. In order to get all of the TU B, C, and D side players game time, the match was played as 3, 30 minute periods. After the first period, nearly all of the TU B side players were subbed out for C side players. This continued into the third period as C players were subbed for D side players. In the end, the Salisbury team came out with a win and the Towson B side suffered its first loss in over 3 seasons. However, the talent among the B and C sides continues to show itself and we remain confident that had we faced a Salisbury team consisting of all second side players, we would have continued our winning streak.

Final Scores

A Side : TU 8 – SU 3 W

B Side : TU 15 – SU 29 L

10/16/10 Results – GWU

This weekend TU traveled to Arlington VA, just outside of DC, to play George Washington University. Because GWU had had two very close games with two very good teams, even though they were 0 and 2, TU came out prepared for a tough match. However, TU dominated right from the start and maintained this dominance throughout the game. The B Side had a tough match but the TU backs were far superior to the GWU backs and were able to kick and run all over them.

Final Scores

A Side : TU 70 – GWU 0 W

B Side : TU 28 – GWU 0 W

10/9/10 Results – UMBC

TU hosted one of their biggest division rivals this weekend in a long awaited rematch. After the 16-15 loss to UMBC last year, this was the match circled on everybody’s calendars. TU came out strong and dominated in almost every phase of the game and allowed only a penalty kick to be scored against them. The B Side showed the same dominance over the UMBC B Side in every phase of play.

Final Scores

A Side : TU 40 – UMBC 3 W

B Side : TU 77 – UMBC 0 W

10/7/10 Results – C Side vs. Loyola

Tonight, Towson’s C Side traveled down the road to Loyola University for a scrimmage against their B Side. Since most of the teams in our league can’t field a C Side, our players haven’t been getting a whole lot of playing time. We were able to schedule them a match against Loyola’s B Side under the lights on their brand new turf rugby pitch. The Cougars, many of which have only played 1 or 2 games, stepped up and played like they had been playing for years. They had a chance to showcase their skills and give the coaches something to think about when making selections in the future. Towson sarted off slow but quickly picked up the pace and rolled Loyola to a 46 – 5 victory.

Final Scores

C Side : TU 46 – Loyola 5 W

Trys scored by Inside Center, Scott Sharik(2),  Scrumhalf, AJ Tutino(2),  Hooker, Tony Marino,  Wing, Sheehan Wheeler,  Wing, Marcos Rego,  and Fullback Brian Fitzpatrick.
